Check out RAW POWER - created by Josh Bayer and published by RETROFIT COMICS which debuts at the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival.

Josh contacted me to color this cover (which may be the front or back of the issue). This was a fun illustration to work on and to figure out the coloring approach.

I received a call from Alexis Cruz and was commissioned to create a cover / promo art for a graphic novel THE UNPROFESSIONALS - created by Colin Rankine & co created by Alexis Cruz.

I read the transcript and it was an extremely fun read with a lot of action and I jumped at the opportunity. The image shown was created in scratchboard and digitally colored - my usual.

Silkscreen prints will be available soon while the comic is being drawn by Chris Moreno - creator of Zombie Dickheads.

Jewel Shepard Benefit Show

The Autumn Society and Dark Delicacies have announced a mini art show based on the cult-classic 80's movie "The Return of the Living Dead". The show is being set up as a charity fundraiser for actress Jewel Shepard who has been recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

I jumped at the opportunity and created this piece specifically for the show. I am donating the sketch, scratchboard piece and silkscreen print(s) in their entirety for the benefit.

WOLFMAN of NYC - Silkscreen book

I am in the process of creating a Wolfman book and wanted to utilize my time at the silkscreen lab creating a companion limited edition book to go along with the main story.

Featured above is the process in creating a silkscreen print using Channels. I have never worked in this method and wanted to experiment in the printmaking process.

The original drawing has many collaged elements to it using a World War 1 photograph background, Fantastic Four 'This Man This Monster' type, some tattoo art influence in the Werewolf inspired by Ed Hardy, a Frankenstein in the landscape and some work I have created in the past collaged in.

1. Are the separations created for the actual silkscreen to be exposed.

2. The first channel Cyan.

3. The addition of Magenta (I debated just stopping here because I loved the look of it already, but since this was my first and I can always pull more prints I decided to just move along and see how it all worked out)

4. The addition of Yellow (I was very happy in my last decision (3) to press on and again wondered if I should continue...

5. The final addition of Black. Everything pulled together but could not go any further due to a sprung up project(s) I need to finish sketches by Friday, a new gallery show (soon to be announced) and visiting with Heather Harris... yes Heather Harris! A great long time friend from California... and a rising superstar.

Next I will display the process of bookmaking and reveal the final book...

EL TAINO

Here is a completed mold of the soon to be EL TAINO© toy to be premiered in a soon to be comic book convention ( I will be announcing soon). I am hard at work on the comic 'American Drifter' and will premiere some of those pages very soon.

EL TAINO© is anatomically correct as you can see but will have a loin cloth covering his shame. A box is being designed and will be casted in resin in a limited edition set of 10.

Jenai Chin created the line art for this Batman/Joker illustration while I created the colors. I aimed for a 1960's style - Adam West Batman color palette. I have taken a break in digital colors in place of hand painting most of my new work. It has been fun getting back into digital coloring and I had a lot of fun working on this piece.

I just completed a sketch for a future silkscreen featuring one of my favorite film stars Reiko Ike.

Reiko Ike (池玲子), is a Japanese actress, singer, and entertainer best known for her roles in the genre of action/erotic movies known as Pink films. Ike's career was launched with the soft core sex film Hot Springs Mimizu Geisha (1971). The release of this film caused a scandal when Ike claimed to have lied about her age to gain a part when in fact she was sixteen years of age.

'Comix Gone Rogue' aims to feature a wide variety of artists interpreting blank variant comic book covers issued by mainstream comic book companies. The blank variant presents many opportunities for artists to have a creative interactive outlet with iconic super heros.

The intention I assume by mainstream companies was for the audience to purchase these variants to have artists who officially worked on the issue to do a quick sketch, autograph or simply decide to keep the crisp white cover untainted.

I saw an opportunity to gather my favorite artists unassociated to the issue to draw the cover in their own unique way. As my collection grew it has lead to an unofficial comics cover show I named 'Comix Gone Rogue'.

The style of each artist that contributes builds a story naturally. Whether related or unrelated to the content within the comic - a new light and dimension is brought to the characters in a truly refreshing way.

All contents based on non monetary goals, all contents are based solely for fan art/tribute. Individual art may be reprinted by sole written permission from artists directly, 'Comix Gone Rogue' gallery may be reprinted for review purposes defined by the Laws of Journalistic Fair Use.

-'COMIX GONE ROGUE' is an invitation based show. To be considered please email edwinvazquez80@gmail.com with 5 samples of your art to familiarize myself to your work.

- Only 5 artists are allowed for each comic character title, if room fills up in an issue it is then closed.

- Signature on cover is accepted but please no website information. I will post a link to your website on the entry blog.

- Any medium accepted as long as applied to the blank/variant cover. Digital art is no longer being accepted.

OTHER CONCERNS:

- This is not paid commissioned work. All artists contribute voluntarily.

- I will distribute the comic variant cover for you. Art will not be sold. Original comic variant cover with original art must be mailed back to me to keep collection intact for a future gallery show.

A New Approach

Recently I have been experimenting with a new approach. This is a sketch I did fooling around and scribbling away. There is no hidden message here, just a few items I have seen that attracted my attention in Tattoo Art, Classic Horror Cinema and Beautiful Women. I hope to create a silkscreen of these experiments to see how they translate into a different medium.

MAD Magazine #511 finalizes the end of my color assistance for Peter Kuper's Spy v. Spy comic strip. My Pre-Columbian Mexican thesis 'The Egghead Codex' has been the driving influence for my color palette in working with the Spy v. Spy issues. As I forge ahead onto new adventures on the cartoon path, I will continue to explore my color palette merging the old and new worlds.

The EGGHEAD CODEX - TOY!!!s

Jenai Chin and I are beginning to create a line of toys based on my designs for 'Egghead' first seen in my thesis project titled 'The EGGHEAD CODEX' I created in 2008 for my masters degree at the School of Visual Arts. Body soon to be created.

I recently had the luck of stumbling onto some original print finds of The Simpsons comics # 1 issued by Bongo and a majestic manga 1976 print of Bouken Dankichi (Lucky Dan Adventure)- art by Keizou Shimada.

When I found the manga book I was told that it was of Suiho Tagawa... one of many influences in my work. Probably because of the icon of Norakuro on the lower left of the book, the seller assumed it was Tagawa but something about the art style told me it wasn't. I later asked a friend and told me the artist was Suiho Tagawa, an artist I never heard of before but the pages inside are remarkable!!! And so I had to share on this blog...

The Simpsons comic I bought close to the cover price!!! I'm debating whether to frame the poster... as I did for the recent Futurama black light poster series.

CREATURE T-SHIRT

My good friend Jon Sperry saw one of my sketches for the 'Creature of the Black Lagoon' and told me that this image would look great on a t-shirt. Not that I didn't believe him but I gave him the sketch and he went for it - creating this mock design of the sketch on a cool green Tshirt!

We are in the process now of finding a t-shirt company to distribute and if all goes well we will take orders very soon!

I recently had the pleasure working with an extremely talented writer and individual Sharon Lintz, writer of Pornhounds and Pornhounds 2. Josh Bayer introduced us and while reading the first issue of Pornhounds I was struck by how well the comic was written and put together. I quickly began production on Pornhounds 2 for a September 2011 release in which I also have an illustration included.

Here is a quick description written by Sharon Lintz:

"The first Pornhounds was about my first job in adult publishing. Pornhounds 2 is about my second job in adult publishing.

While writing Pornhounds 2, I was diagnosed with cancer. So, some of this book is about cancer.

I just completed a project directed by Josh Bayer : The idea was to do a riff on Scott McCloud's "Five Card Nancy" exercise. The instructions were to pick at random two Nancy comic panels and make up a narrative between the two formerly unrelated panels. (The first and last panels were redrawn but are original Nancy panels I developed my narrative between.)

A great show was held by Wizard World Philadelphia 2011 this past weekend. The event was held at Philly's New convention center near Market Street. Everyone I met was so friendly which made the event so welcoming and fun! I had a great time and was able to showcase my self published comic 'Johnny Is Dead'.

Definitely check for future Wizard World comicons in your area and I look forward to attending next years Wizard World in Philadelphia.

Brave New Worlds? Autumn Society? TMNT? - COWABUNGA!!!

I focused my TMNT illustration on the original Kevin Eastman/Peter Laird's version. I began with my usual technique by drawing the sketch with my left hand (seen on left sketch). Once I had everything in place after countless erasing - I traced and cleaned up the lines with my right hand onto scracthboard beginning the scratch process. (seen on the right)

When I heard of this show I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it - not to mention an actual TURTLE VAN!!! Who could pass an opportunity like that?

Next I will be preparing for colors - check back very soon for that update!!!

Tattoo Night

I had the pleasure of tattooing my friend Tanya Linn Albrigsten-Frable tonight. Tanya and I have been wanting to meet up so we can work together on a tattoo for her for about 3 months and tonight finally was that night. She sent me the sketch on Saturday of last week and I simply cleaned up the lines to make it tattoo ready.

Bringing a photo back to "life" - especially scanned from a magazine where ripples on the page, the print dot patterns and fade caused by the actual paper can be a very long and challenging process.

Jenai Chin asked me to do just that to have a sample of images she worked on to be presented in her work portfolio.

In this example, Jenai designed the tattoos that were placed on Chase Crawford for an article printed in INTERVIEW Magazine about a year ago. No these are not real tattoos but temporary for the photo shoot.

In total there are about 6 images that need to be touched up. The image above is just the beginning of my touch ups as I continue to bring back to "life" these amazing photos. (The Knuckle "A" I feel has been lost)

This process can be tricky as overworking by using computer tools can destroy the photo completely and distract the viewer - the trick in using computers I tell my students is "to fool viewers that a computer was never used."

The other night after finishing a piece titled 'Famous Monsters' - I decided to do an excercise in image making. It was late at night and I was ready for bed so I worked on this for a very short time - creating just for the sake of creating.

There are only two images placed with each other - purposely limiting the materials I had to work with. One image being an advertisement for a RCA VICTOR radio!!! and the other a poster for the movie the 'Taxi Driver'.

Before researching the RCA image I thought it was an engine. The radios unique and outdated design I felt worked well with the character of the 'Taxi Driver' as the original image looks like an engine set inside a mans brain. Later on I found out it was a radio from the 1930's. If I worked on the image a bit more I would take out the 'RCA VICTOR' and replace it with something more relevant towards the character.

I have been working on editing the latest issue of World War 3 Illustrated # 42, themed 'Liberation: From the Mid-East to the Mid-West'. I submitted this sketch as a possible cover illustration but sadly it was REJECTED!!!

This piece will more than likely remain only as a sketch and maybe picked up for something else to be completed. I was hoping to have a wrap around cover so the cover of the image is on the right with the skull and the back cover would be with the eagle.

Friday, January 14, 2011 - The World War 3 Retrospective show held at Exit Art Gallery was reviewed in the New York Times newspaper. I am fortunate to be a part of this show and work alongside many of its contributors such as Peter Kuper, Seth Tobocman, Nicole Schulman, Fly and Sandy Jimenez to name a few. At the Exit Art Gallery you will find a mural I painted at the main entrance as well as 4 pieces included in the show. The Times review also mentioned the ongoing magazines latest issue #41 themed 'The Food Chain' which I contributed as an editor and created the back cover with my classic image " I love it".

It's almost here. I just completed the final image for the illustration section of the book I have been working on for the past year. All that is left is the comic section and music disc and it is ready to be sent to the printers.

I am debating on whether to go with color or black & white - I am leaning towards b&w at the moment.

Here is a color study of 'Johnny Is Dead' - my new book - pages 2 & 3. I still need to add the comic section in the top left but you can see some of my writing so far.

I am hoping for a January 2011 release which will be published in a manga-size book - 32 pages - with audio c.d.
